Tile-line flashings and valleys. Where the tiled surface meets a wall, a chimney, a valley or a penetration. Most tiled-roof leaks start at one of these, not in the field of the roof.

Boral and Bristile. Both widely used across Australian concrete and terracotta roofing. Bristile terracotta turns up regularly on Adelaide roofs from the 1990s onward.

Why matching is the hard part. Tile profiles are not interchangeable - the batten gauge, the interlock, the cover width and the headlap all differ between profiles and often between eras of the same brand. A tile that is the right colour and the wrong profile will not sit down, and a roof with mismatched profiles leaks at the boundary between them.

What replacement costs. Roof tile replacement cost depends almost entirely on whether a match exists, not on the tile itself - new roof tiles are cheap, and sourcing the right ones is the job. Statutory warranties attach to domestic building work. Under the same Act, domestic building work carries statutory warranties - that the work be performed with care and skill, using suitable materials, in accordance with the agreed plans. Insurance is separate from licensing. Ask for both. A licence says someone is entitled to contract for the work; insurance is what covers your property if a tile goes through a skylight.

Heritage and character overlays change the rules, not just the look. A number of streets through Burnside, Norwood and Toorak Gardens sit inside Historic Area or Character Overlays where changing roof material, profile or colour needs planning consent. Like-for-like repair and maintenance does not. A roof tiler who does not know which side of that line your job falls on can create a compliance problem out of a repair.

What to ask any roof tiling contractor. The licence number. Whether they identified the tile on your roof and can name it. What happens if an exact match cannot be sourced. Whether the quote is fixed in writing. And whether the person quoting is the person doing the work.

Searches for roof tilers near me and tile roofers near me all return the same mix - a handful of specialists, a lot of general roofing companies, and directories. Distance is rarely the thing that matters.

What matters is whether they work in tile at all. A local roof tiler near me search will not tell you that, and neither will roof tilers in my area. Plenty of general roofing companies will quote a tiled roof and then treat it as a metal job with different fixings.
